Overall Function: Environmental Defense Fund is seeking a Program Director to lead the New England Region Oceans Team in advancing work to restore the region's fishery resources and make sustainable fishing practices and conservation the most economically sound way of doing business.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Supervise the New England oceans program team including scientists, business experts, fishery specialists, research and administrative associates, consultants and others to design and implement innovative strategies to improve public policies related to ocean conservation goals.
• Serve as primary liaison with other Environmental Defense Fund regional and national oceans program staff and contribute to their objectives.
• Analyze complex fishery management programs to find ways to eliminate overfishing, increase profitability, strengthen fishing communities, and reduce habitat loss.
• Forge alliances among disparate interest groups to coordinate citizen and environmental groups in New England, help build regional and national coalitions, and promote conservation leadership in the business community.
• Engage the media to effectively advance project objectives and communicate project results to a broad array of audiences.
• Coordinate the region's work with the New England Fishery Management Council, National Marine Fisheries Service, and other federal and state fishery and ocean conservation agencies.
• Engage academic scientists, policy experts, and others to solve complex problems.
• Represent the New England oceans program at national trustees meetings.
• Work with Environmental Defense Fund fundraisers to identify potential funding sources and secure grants and help expand the program.
• Prepare and supervise annual budget for the regional program.
• Primary responsibility for reviewing and updating long-term workplan.

Qualifications:

• Bachelors Degree in a marine biology, natural resource economics, or related discipline. Advance degree highly preferred.
• Seven or more years relevant work experience in fisheries or natural resources policy, management, or related field; with particular emphasis on managing complex policy, regulatory, or legislative processes.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively manage a growing program and staff.
• Familiar with conservation issues related to fisheries. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work constructively with nonprofit colleagues and partners, scientists and economists, industry leaders, regulators and public policy decision makers.
• Knowledge of federal and state ocean conservation laws and regulations, preferred.
