Position: Technical Co-Founder
I am the founder of an internet company building a portfolio of web applications targeting several segments of the fitness industry. The idea is fairly well conceptualized, and I have a decent idea of the product roadmap and initial monetization strategy.
Thus far, I am the sole founder. My strengths are more on the business side---things like defining corporate vision and strategy, raising $$, putting together and implementing a marketing plan, securing partnerships, assembling a management team and advisory board, etc. As the concept is being very well received and rapidly gaining momentum, it is time for me to think seriously about bringing on a co-founder.
While I am flexible about the exact background this person will have, he/she should have a complementary skillset to mine. Each of us will end up wearing many hats, but I will probably be more outward facing (customers, partners, investors, etc) and this person will be more inward facing (technology, architecture, operations, support, etc). This person should also have good strategic business chops and a very entrepreneurial mindset.
A big immediate objective for the company is to get the initial prototype built. The goal of this prototype will be to get a core base of users, show initial traction, and go raise a seed round of financing. It would be great if this yet-to-be-named co-founder is rooted strongly on the technical side, either coming from an architecture/design background, product management or something comparable. That way he/she can take the lead in making the key technology decisions to ensure the sites gets built quickly and well, both from a user experience and functionality standpoint as well as scalability/reliability. Startup experience, highly scaleable consumer-facing internet experience, and a passion for at least one endurance sport (running, cycling, triathalons, etc.) are highly desired, as is any experience with RoR, rapid prototyping, agile development, etc.
Given the company is bootstrapped thus far, compensation will initially be equity-driven. In addition to equity, this person will get the opportunity to start a company from just about pure inception. He/she will also get exposure to many of the emerging Web 2.0 technologies. While I can't guarantee that this will ultimately be a home run, I can guarantee that we will swing for the fences, learn a ton, and have a blast doing it.
